    Abstract: 夏炘之氏,知者不多,以其學於清時未顯,雖後佐戎左宗棠之幕,所職亦如浮光之逝,未果即去。
    其《述朱質疑》雖名為〈質疑〉,實則仍順朱子而下,故與其云「質疑」,不若云「述朱」,則朱學之在夏炘者,影響最是深鉅,是其以「景紫堂」為目,殆非無因。
    本論文之首,所以先言「乾嘉」,蓋以其時學術之照應,非戴即惠,此戴震、惠棟之學豁顯於乾嘉,盈為主流,或亦時勢之趨。而其時夏炘獨尊朱子,以考證兼合義理,不偏漢,亦不倚宋,雖非拔萃,其為特立者,允為可知。
    至於「敬」義之論,雖云承朱而來,順其流衍,則二程之學,亦為旨要。尤以程頤言「敬」之說,更為夏炘所本,是知程朱之「敬」為夏氏〈述朱〉旨要,當無疑議。再以只言「敬」,那是敬事,非真所謂的敬,乃即「主一」的敬。故此敬,是心之靜;心有所靜,即有所敬,則為無適,是而主一無適即敬,乃知心靜而敬,敬而純,自能貫誠之與仁,使容貌端,思慮澄。之外,亦通小學大學,使人事正,天德明。順是,則為人之道以立,為人之道立,即無往而無非善。
