The VOCs evaporating from the river water surface are identified and the concentration distribution characteristics of VOCs are also described. The air samples were collected at different locations of water surface along the river and at different places with various distances from the river. These samples were then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively by GC/ECD and GC/FID. The results of this study showed that more than 20 kinds of VOCs were found in the near environment of the river and some of them have been reported to be carcinogens. Basically, the concentrations of VOCs are much lower at the locations away from the river, therefore we might reasonably hypothesize that the VOCs evaporating from the heavily polluted river may not significantly affect the health of residents living near the river.
