Abstract: Regarding social and communicative factors in languages, language
communication plays a crucial role in social interaction. Hence, social
interaction skills are considered as part of the interactive experience in using
target language for interpersonal communication. Interlocutors can practice
social interaction in English language. This study examines whether social
interaction skills can aid improving interlocutors’ communication in English.
Subjects are 70 community adults. An exploratory approach via personal
communication and survey questionnaires is the main tool utilized for data
collection and analysis in this project. Subjects’ social interaction skills are
investigated by using the survey questionnaire, Interpersonal Communication
Competence Inventory (ICCI). The sub-factors of the ICCI for social interaction
skills are employed for explaining the impact on interpersonal interaction. In
addition, Student Attitude Questionnaire (SAQ) is also employed for subjects to
self-evaluate their attitudes toward English language communication. Through
data analysis, the results should explore the relationships between individual
social interaction skills and English language communication competence.
