Title: The Comparison of Some Part of Body by Applying Metonymic Concept(the Part for the Whole)in English and Chinese
    Authors: Chiung-Li Li
    Date: 1995-03
    Issue Date: 2011-03-31T06:17:05Z (UTC)
Abstract: Figuraive speeches function actively not only in Chinese but also in English. As a matter of fact, there are many cross-cultural examples in both of the two languages.
In our daily life,we often use metonymies to express our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.Metonymic concepts are based on our experiences and the grounding of metonymic concepts usually involves direct physical or casual associations.Synecdoche is a rhetorical device by applying one of metonymic concepts(the part for the whole or vice versa)to cgaracterize our ideas.
In English and Chinese,we often use soe parts of body to refer to a person or people.Threrfore,we can apply The Part For The Whole to compare English with Chinese and find out the similarities and differences between the two languages.
